Industrial processing into sugar and rum is the main use made of sugarcane. However, the impressive amount of biomass produced by this plant can also be converted into energy — direct combustion or biofuel.
"Energy" sugarcane is booming worldwide. In fact, sugarcane is one of the "cleanest" crops in the world. Its fuel efficiency is much greater than that of maize or wheat. Moreover, producing energy rather than sugar does not jeopardize global coverage of basic food requirements.
At the same time as biofuel ethanol production, some varieties with a high fibre content
are selected to produce energy directly through combustion. As a non‑food crop, these varieties can be grown in degraded zones with low fertility, or for erosion control.
